I spend my days revealing to students and clients the best parts of themselves. Helping them to recognize how their uniqueness matters to employers.
As I coach people for their job interviews, preparing them to share their talents with potential employers, clients will often say, “I feel like I’m bragging. It’s so uncomfortable talking about myself.” To which I respond… “That’s your ego talking. You can’t help that you were given unique talents that came with your genetic and spiritual DNA.”
The gift of understanding numbers, making people laugh, being athletic, bringing peace, playing music, creating, fixing, building, organizing, whatever comes easy to you, you did not create, it came with your package. As a sentient being, your “work” is to discover how best to use these gifts to serve in ways that call to you.
Owning your gifts, perhaps even being in awe of them; learning to appreciate and be in awe of others’ gifts would bring a lot of collaboration to the world of work. Offering to share your gifts and skills with others is not bragging, it’s informing.
Imagine saying to a potential employer “Look, I don’t know why I was born with this gift I just know I appreciate it. I have acquired skills around this natural talent that make me excellent at what I do. I want to use these talents to help your business grow. Use me well and we both benefit.”
Wow… now there’s a different approach. Honest, clear, directive, confident.
Have you learned to talk about yourself in a humble, informative, appreciative way? If the answer is “not yet” let’s work together to begin to understand how your uniqueness matters.
